THEORETICAL APPROACH
There are many
different counselling theories, or “Approaches”. I originally trained as a
“Person-Centred” Counsellor. It is also sometimes known as “Client-Centred”,
“Humanistic” or “Rogerian”
This approach was based on the work of Dr. Carl Rogers, an eminent Psychologist
1902-1987. Rogers’ theories and way of working had a worldwide effect on
Counselling, Teaching, Management, Child-care, Patient- care and
Conflict-Resolution.
The Person Centred Approach is considered to be safe, successful, and is a well
known and respected method of counselling.
Great emphasis is placed on the relationship formed between the counsellor and
client, and the counsellor works only with what YOU choose to disclose and at
your pace. Rogers believed it is the client who is the best expert about
themselves, and that if the counsellor creates the right conditions the client
is enabled to find their own solutions, or come to terms with their problem.
The objective is for the client to develop their inner resources, and to see
themselves as a person with the power and freedom to change.
Individuality, and cultural, social, religious, or spiritual beliefs and values
are always respected and honoured.
Since gaining my original Diploma I have continued taking other courses and
qualifications, and may sometimes integrate other ways of working if I feel
these will benefit the client. My theoretical approach is
therefore known as “Eclectic”.
